Jenny Whiteley Coming to Spirit of Rasputin’s

The Spirit of Rasputin’s is proud to present, Juno Award winner, Jenny Whiteley, in concert January 15 at the Westboro Mason’s Hall, 430 Churchill Ave at Byron.  For this show, Jenny will be accompanied by her husband and musical collaborator, Joey Wright.

An accomplished, gifted, and musically rewarding singer and songwriter whose lyrics capture the soul of real-life experiences, Jenny Whiteley would have you believe she has decades of anecdotes to draw from. Her evocative, self-titled debut won the Juno Award for Best Roots & Traditional Recording: Solo in March 2001. The daughter of renowned blues musician Chris Whiteley, being a prodigy of a musical family meant her destiny was determined long ago. Her peers have recently recognized Jenny’s incredible voice. Prairie Oyster invited Jenny to sing on their re-released “Man In The Moon” (a song written by Jenny’s father Chris, incidentally), and that is Jenny singing background vocals on Sarah Harmer’s hit song “Basement Apartment.” Jenny has been awarded showcase opportunities at a number of exclusive North American festivals, including the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals, The North American Folk Alliance, and South By Southwest Music Festival & Conference.

Prescott – More Than a Band

Prescott with Adam Puddington, Randall Prescott and Tracy BrownPrescott is more than just a band, they are a bridge: between the traditional and the contemporary, the old and the new, the young and the old, traversing the deep river of slow time.

Which is to say, what a great show. Here we run into the futility of the written word in describing a musical moment, but Prescott’s performance at the Westboro Masonic Temple was, for all intents and purposes, perfect. The up-and-coming brother/sister duo shared the stage with parents Tracey and Randall of Prescott-Brown, as well as Adam Puddington, to create an unforgettable night of music.

KellyOpening the evening was Kelly Prescott with her husband Adam, and the playful energy between them infused an already superlative performance with pure joy. They played several songs from Kelly’s forthcoming solo album leaving me eagerly awaiting the arrival of January so that I could hear those songs again and again. Continue reading

Spirit of Rasputin’s – Concert News!

Some exciting news regarding the Prescott concert…  As most of you know, Kelly and Kaylen, the brother and sister who make up Prescott, are carrying on a fine musical family tradition that goes back generations.  Those roots include Grandfathers Joe Brown and Irwin Prescott who are both members of the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame.  Well, the news is that Kelly and Kaylen, whose bent is towards alt-country/Americana music, will be joined on stage by their parents, Tracey Brown and Randall Prescott, who are both pillars of the Ottawa Valley country music scene.  This will be very cool!  I’m really looking forward to it.

Also, check out Ron Moores’ Back 40 radio show on CKCU at noon on Saturday, the 13th.  Kaylen and Kelly will be interviewed and may even play live on the radio.

Concert tickets are available at the Folklore Centre.  Tickets are $20 or $15 for students.

Hope to see you at the concert on November the 20th.   (For more details go to www.rasputins.ca (http://www NULL.rasputins NULL.ca/).)
