The Shoe Drops

When: Sat May 12, 2018 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Where: Westboro Masonic Hall

Tight three-part vocal harmonies and virtuoso string-picking: These are the sounds of The Shoe Drops, the Ottawa-area bluegrass band that we’re bringing to Westboro Masonic Hall on Saturday, May 12 at 8:00 pm. It’s the latest concert in our Featured Artists Series.

Also joining us will be singer-songwriter Alex Sinclair as opening artist.

The Shoe Drops play a blend of acoustic bluegrass, folk and country music — mostly original songs written by banjo player and singer Charlie Sohmer, who has six albums and over 500 songs to his credit. One of his songs was an award-winner in the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals’ Songs from the Heart competition. Charlie also plays with the Texas-swing band Shirt Tearing Boys.

Guitarist and singer Dan Artuso plays with Lynne Hanson and was formerly with Fat Man Waving and The Black Donnellys. He also runs his own recording studio.

Mandolinist Pat McLaughlin plays with The Gram Parsons Tribute Band and The Vinyl Frontier. Bass player and singer Martin Newman is currently with The Lucas Hanneman Express and Jack Pine & the Fire.

Fiddler Keith Snider, now with Lucky Ron, played for years with the alt-country band The Fiftymen.

Opening artist Alex Sinclair is a prolific songwriter; his output includes over
200 satirical songs for CBC Radio. He was a member of the Canadian folk trio
Tamarack for more than 30 years and was recently President of Folk Music Ontario.

Alex will be talking and singing on CKCU FM 93.1 on the Canadian Spaces show on
Saturday, May 12 at around 11:00 am. Preceding him at 10:45 will be the Celtic harp
duo Acacia Lyra: Susan Sweeney Hermon and Janine Dudding. (Susan is also President
of Spirit of Rasputin’s!)
