Jenny Whiteley & Friends open our new concert season on September 9

Spirit of Rasputin’s launches a new season of its Featured Artists Series with a concert by country-folk-roots singer-songwriter Jenny Whiteley on Saturday, September 9 at Ottawa’s Westboro Masonic Hall.

Her performance will feature songs from her latest album The Original Jenny Whiteley, which according to the Waterloo Region Record (https://www NULL.therecord “sounds like the best front porch concert you never heard this summer.” It draws on Jenny’s formative influences and includes originals in the style of early jazz, jug band and old-time music.

The album was nominated for the 2017 Juno Award as Traditional Roots Album of the Year. Jenny is one of the very few artists to have won Junos for both of her first two albums.

She worked on The Original Jenny Whiteley with Sam Ellison and Teilhard Frost (Sheesham and Lotus), who will be backing her up at the concert with banjo, fiddle, harmonica, jug, jaw harp, whistling and hand and body percussion.

Also joining Jenny will be her collaborator and husband Joey Wright on guitar and mandolin and Toronto singer-songwriter Kristine Schmitt with vocals.

The opening artist will be Ottawa-based traditional country and folk musician Mabel Beggs, whose repertoire, including her original tunes, recalls the sound of the early radio days. She also plays bluegrass, old-time and country with The Monroe Sisters, Pleasant Goat & Big Big Wolf, and the Aiken & Beggs duo.

Showtime is 8:00 pm on Saturday, September 9, with doors opening at 7:30, at the Westboro Masonic Hall at 430 Churchill Ave. N. at Byron. Tickets are $25, available online with PayPal or credit cards (click below) or in cash at the door. Seating is limited, so advance purchase is recommended.
